Instructions #1: On Writing Instructions

August 18, 2010 § 4 Comments

A big thank you for your suggestions on instructions. The series has begun.

(I was lying in bed trying to sleep, but obstructed by my guilt – I had promised myself I would write tonight. Lucky for me, the lanky man with bad teeth came to call.)

On Writing Instructions

Keep in mind your customers:
the tree-like, lanky man with brittle teeth
who snaps off every word; your next
door neighbor, ruffled, wise, with
fingertips gnawed cherry red; the pin curled
gray who nibbles at the dawn; the man who
dreams of fish and chips. They are the ones
you serve. It’s not an easy thing to tailor
this buffet. Place the plates just so.
